Methods of Picture Hanging

There are several methods for hanging pictures, each offering different advantages depending on your wall type, artwork weight, and design goals. Choosing the right picture hanging system can help preserve your walls, enhance your space, and ensure your artwork stays secure.

No-Damage Picture Hanging -

If you're renting or want a quick solution, adhesive picture hanging strips offer a nail free alternative. These products work best with light to medium-weight frames and stick directly to the wall surface. Brands like Command™ Strips are popular for their easy removal and clean finish, without any damage to the walls.

However we do not recommend this method for pictures that weigh more than 5kg or for a long term solution.

Traditional Picture Hanging with Nails and Hooks -

The most common method for hanging pictures on drywall involves nails or picture hooks. For lightweight frames, a single hook or nail may be enough. For heavier artwork, it's best to use wall anchors or screws drilled into wall studs for added support.

Picture Rails and Hanging Systems -

Picture rails are a great solution for homeowners or galleries looking to hang art without damaging the walls. This method uses a molding or track installed near the ceiling, along with hooks and hanging cords that suspend the artwork. Picture rail systems are ideal for historic homes, art installations, or spaces where art is rotated frequently.

Using J-Hooks with Screws for Secure Picture Hanging -

For a sturdy and reliable way to hang medium to heavy artwork, J-hooks with screws are an excellent choice. They’re also easy to level and adjust.

French Cleats -

For heavy or oversized pieces, French cleats provide strong support and perfect alignment. This system uses interlocking angled brackets to secure artwork flat against the wall.

The French cleat also ensures that the work is flush to the wall without gaps at the side creating a sleek and symmetrical looking finish.
